Learning@Schools - Jan 2012Confernce began with an opening address by the new Minister of Education Hekia Parata. This focussed on teacher practice and motivation to lead students into cutting edge learning.
Keynote - Frank Green - UK
Frank is the CEO of Leigh Acadamies Trust Schools

He was given funding to build the academy. He has built 4 schools, all with no more than 600 students in each, within one school. Working with students who were not able to move through to their local secondary, they have developed a philosophy of learning that is so successful, they are setting up other schools in the UK and globally.

Ahuroa School presentation

Ahuroa School, Puhoi.
Decile 7, 65 students. All students either own or have access to an
iPad or iPod.
No Server - Every student has a Google account, they use Google Apps,
and download files and photos to Dropbox for sharing.
No Library - All students have an Auckland Library Card, they go online to
choose books and read on their iPad, when their time is up, the book disappears - no overdue fees! Each week a teacher aide takes 10 students in the school van to the local library in Warkworth to collect books ordered online for Juniors etc.
No Interactive Whiteboards - Each class now has a very large LCD screen, speakers and teachers and students hook up their iPads for learning.
No Written reports - Every student meets with Principal and teacher twice a year - each meeting takes 45mins - 1hr, they go through the students learning, goals and where to next. Minutes are taken, printed and given to student and parent.
Individualised Timetables - Google Calendar is used to set the school and
individual timetables. Times are set in for specific teaching times for Maths/Reading/Conferencing etc. and any other times are added by students
to complete by managing their own timetables. This starts from middle school. An individualised timetable for Junior School is set out on a spread sheet and shared weekly.
E-Portfolios - Every student uses their iPad for their e-portfolio. Senior students are mentors for Junior students. They must timetable in 10-15mins per day to work with thier assigned student to listen to them read, basic facts, write. They must also assist them setting up their e-portfolio.
Applications - Junior School - Drill and Kill - these are set by teachers and
used on a regular basis to focus on Literacy and Maths.
Middle / Senior school applications are more creative and relate to issues around their personalised learning. If students upload inappropriate apps they are simply deleted.

Auckland Observation Visit - May 2011

Teachers and Principals from 6 schools visited Viscount Primary in Mangere and Gulf Harbour in Whangaparaoa to view Inquiry in Action.
This was a follow up to the Lane Clarke seminar, to view and observe how Inquiry was integrated into each school, how teachers used different processes, planners, frameworks in their classrooms, how processes and skills were modelled and to talk to students about their learning.
