Course Title: A Beginners Guide to Wiki and Blog! Where do I start?
Presenter: Samantha Thompson Te Rā: - Thursday 25 Feb 2010 Te Wā: - RCC HPWest Room Rotorua
Key Points: Everyone there made their own wikispace · A Wiki is, in simple terms, a group of web pages with “edit” buttons on them. · You can collaborate with anyone you choose on your wikispace. Wikispaces is simple enough for anyone to use, but has enough sophistication so that you can be creative and get things done. · In a school setting a wikispace can be set up for each individual child and used : o To present work on so parents, other classes, family members or distant friends can see what you have done. (Authentic context) o To communicate with pupils in other classes, schools, towns or countries (a real audience) · School or class wikispaces can be used for the same reasons and can still have a page per child. They can also be used as o A newsletter o Promotion o To show off good work o Build a relationship with another school
One advantage of Wiki over a blog or Youtube is that a wikispace can be edited. A blog or Youtube stays there forever o You can change or delete what is on there o You can make a comment on it o You can allow other people (Mum or the teacher)to edit it
Relevance to teachers: The ICT Facilitator can walk you through the setting up process.
Wikispace gives an exciting, authentic, integrated option when it comes to publishing work.
Wiki presentations can be used to monitor progress. February vs November or year3 vs year6 in time.
A teacher can start on a Wikispace as a class project using a laptop and projector and produce a class page but that is not making the most of its potential.
While Wikispace needs no new software and is free for K-G12 schools, to get the best from this resource you will need enough hardware to allow pupils to work on their individual spaces. · A computer between 2 pupils (3 max) · Camera with video capability · Audio recording capability · In-class internet access (preferably wireless) · A scanner · A projector
Strategies / Suggestions to implement into the classroom:
Teachers should set up a wikispace and start to tutu now, so when the schools get their class computer sets, they are already fairly confident about what to do.
